Sister Lucia Kenny, RSHM, died peacefully at Marymount Convent, Tarrytown, NY, on Tuesday, January 18, 2022.   

Sister Lucia Kenny RSHM, died at Marymount Convent, Tarrytown, NY, Tuesday, January 18, 2022. She was 89 years of age and had been a member of the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary for 72 years.

She was born Therese Rose Kenny in Dublin, Ireland, on February 6, 1932, to John and Charlotte Griffin Kenny. 

She received a BA from Marymount College, Tarrytown, NY, and a Masters in Library Science and a Masters in American Literature from St. John’s University, Queens, NY. 

She attended Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary high schools in Ferrybank, Co. Waterford, Ireland, and in Neuilly, France. She entered the congregation at the RSHM Novitiate in Tarrytown, NY, on September 8, 1956. Sr. Lucia made her first vows on August 30, 1949, in Tarrytown, where she also made her final vows on August 29, 1954. 

Sister Lucia began her ministry in education teaching in elementary school. She taught at St. Thomas Aquinas School, Bronx, NY (1949-1954); St. Anne’s School, Garden City, NY (1954-1967); and St. Pius X School, Rosedale, NY (1983-1984). 

Sr. Lucia was also a librarian at Marymount School, Richmond, VA (1984-1990) and Ascension School, New York City (1995-2000). 

She spent many years serving in the RSHM schools in Europe. At Marymount International School, Rome, Italy (1967-1976), she taught and served as an elementary school principal for three years. She also taught at Marymount International School, Neuilly/Paris, France (1976-1983). Several years later, she returned to the school in Rome, taught in the elementary school and assisted in the high school library (1990-1994). 

Sister Lucia was the archivist for the Eastern American Province of the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary, serving in this position from 2000 to 2014, when she retired from active ministry.

She was living at Marymount Convent at the time of her death.

Sister Lucia is survived by her sister Maire Kenny D’Arcy, her niece Gena Plunkett, and nephews, David D’Arcy and Hugh D’Arcy, and by the members of her religious community.

    Fond memories of Sr Lucia during my time at Marymount Rome 1974-78. Thank you for your lovely smiles, you always made me happy!
