Who We Are

The Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary treasure the friendships and associations shared with students, faculties, staffs, families, co-workers, and friends over the years. The desire for all to connect in a mutually enriching way led to the global formation of the Sacred Heart of Mary Extended Family and includes women and men from all walks of life who embrace the spirit of the RSHM community and want “to share in the life-giving misson of Jesus Christ.”

In New York, Clare Horn and Pat Healy serve as co-chairs for the SHM Extended Family in the Eastern American Area.

Today, the RSHM Institute focuses on justice, peace and the integrity of creation – with an emphasis on helping those on the margins of society. In addition to volunteer opportunities, the SHM Extended Family also offers weekend retreats and days of prayer.

Throughout the world these friends, collaborators and co-ministers share the RSHM mission with their families, colleagues and others they encounter. SHM Extended Family events have been held in New York, Los Angeles, London, and Rome and have included attendance at Area Day conferences, lectures, liturgies, and an annual retreat and days of reflection.

If you wish to deepen your understanding of the charism of our founder Jean Gailhac and the history and mission of the RSHM Institute; as well as deepen your understanding of the challenges of the Church today and the RSHM Institute’s focus on justice, peace and integrity of creation, “promoting the life and dignity of all our sisters and brothers,” join our SHM Extended Family.

SHM Extended Family members reflect on the impact this journey has had on their lives:

“I love being part of the Extended Family because of the opportunity it has given me to share in the charism of the RSHM, to assist in their work, carry on their values and belong to a community of prayer. I am so grateful for the inspiring women I have met and for the support we give each other.”

“The whole is greater than the sum of its parts….” Varied as my life has been and still is, the Extended Family has the power to make my life whole, of a piece, one. It draws me back to roots, pulls life together, brings peace and beautiful human connections. I treasure our Extended Family.”
