Sister Martin Fleming, RSHM, died at Marymount Convent, Tarrytown, NY, on Monday, December 13, 2021.   

Sister Martin Fleming RSHM died at Marymount Convent, Tarrytown, NY, Monday, December 13, 2021. She was 89 years of age and had been a member of the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary for 63 years. 

She was born Mary Veronica Fleming in Cummer, Co. Galway, Ireland, on June 13, 1932, to John and Norah Keane Fleming. 

She received a BA in History from Marymount College, Tarrytown, NY, an MA in Education from Hunter College, New York NY, and an MA in Religious Studies from St. Joseph’s Seminary in Yonkers, NY. 

She entered the congregation at the RSHM Novitiate in Tarrytown, NY, on September 4, 1956. She made her first vows on June 15, 1958, in Tarrytown, where she also made her final vows on August 25, 1963. 

Sister Martin began her many years of ministry in education at the Academy of the Sacred Heart of Mary in Sag Harbor, NY, teaching in the elementary school (1958-1962). She taught at Marymount International School London (Kingston), England (1963-1967), St. Catharine of Alexandria School, Brooklyn, NY (1967-1972), Our Lady of Good Counsel School (1972-1975), and St. Joseph’s School (1975-1983), both in New York City, NY. She also taught at Marymount School, Richmond, VA (1983-1986), St. Barnabas High School, Bronx, NY (1986-1987) and Marymount School of New York (1987-1999). Her final years of ministry were spent at Marymount School Paris, France (1999-2016).

She moved to Marymount Convent, Tarrytown, NY, in 2016, and was living there at the time of her death.

Sister Martin is predeceased by her parents, her sisters, Teresa Gilleran and Phil Connor, and her brothers, Joseph and John. She is survived by her sisters, Agnes Fleming RSHM, Kathleen Fleming Wall, Bridgie McEvoy, and Eileen Flood, and her brothers, Patrick and Martin, and by the members of her religious community.

Services at Marymount Convent, 32 Warren Avenue, Tarrytown, NY. Visiting Thursday, October 16, 3:30 – 7:00 pm with Vigil Service 7:00 pm. Mass of Christian Burial, Friday, October 17, 10:30 am. Burial Mount Calvary Cemetery, White Plains.
