Sister Margaret Ellen Flannelly, RSHM, died peacefully Friday, December 18, 2020 at Phelps Hospital in Tarrytown, New York.

Sister Margaret Ellen Flannelly RSHM, previously known as Sister Annunciation, died December 18, 2020. She was 85 years of age and had been a Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary for 65 years. She was a member of the community of Marymount Convent, Tarrytown, NY, at the time of her death.

Sister Margaret Ellen was born in New York City, NY, on October 15, 1937, to Louis and Helen Durkin Flannelly.

She received a BA in History from Marymount College, Tarrytown, NY, plus an MA and a PhD in Political History from the University of Notre Dame.

After graduating from the Academy of the Sacred Heart of Mary (Park Terrace) in Manhattan, she entered the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary at Marymount in Tarrytown, NY, on September 8, 1953. She made her first vows on April 10, 1955, in Tarrytown, and made her final vows there on August 28, 1960.

In her first ministry, she returned to the Academy of the Sacred Heart of Mary, Park Terrace, where she taught for two years (1957-1959) and a few years later was principal (1973-1974).

Between 1960 and 2007, she served in many capacities at Marymount College, Tarrytown, NY. In addition to teaching political science she also served as academic administrator and dean. When Marymount College became part of Fordham University, she was the first chaplain to the alumnae of Marymount College of Fordham University (2007-2009).

Reflecting on her years at Marymount College, she said, “I have been part of Marymount’s history, as a political science teacher and academic administrator, for at least 40 of its 100 years. As a Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary, it has been a challenging and life-giving ministry for me.”

Sister Margaret Ellen served her RSHM sisters as coordinator of Marymount Convent, Tarrytown, NY (1997-2003) and as Provincial Councillor of the Eastern American Province of the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary (2008-2014). In 2018, she moved to Marymount Convent, Tarrytown, NY.

She is survived by the members of her religious community, many friends and those she served.

Mass of Christian Burial, Tuesday, December 22, 10:30 a.m.. Burial Mount Calvary Cemetery, White Plains. Because of the COVID-19 crisis, visitors are not permitted in the Convent.
